Rosenstein: I Wouldn't Fire Mueller From Russia Probe Without 'Good Cause'

A longtime confidante of Donald Trump said in a television interview last night that the United States president was considering firing special counsel Robert Mueller, who is now leading the FBI's probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election. "Special counsel Mueller may be fired only for good cause, and I am required to put that cause in writing. If there were not good cause it wouldn't matter what anyone said".

On Monday evening, Chris Ruddy, CEO of the right wing news website Newsmax and loyal friend of the president told PBS News Hour he believed Trump was weighing the option of firing Mueller.

Rosenstein's testimony comes amid public statements from Trump confidants that the American president is mulling removing Mueller from the investigation.

Rosenstein said he was also unaware of any "secret plan" to get rid of Mueller.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein says he wouldn't follow orders from President Donald Trump or anyone else to fire special counsel Robert Mueller unless they were "lawful and appropriate orders".

President Donald Trump will remain in office for 8 years, and the thought of that "horrifies liberals", former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R) said Tuesday.

The topic of the 2 p.m. ET hearing is the Justice Department's budget. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., if he's seen any reason for Mueller to be fired, Rosenstein said, "I have not".

"It is the House Judiciary Committee that should be the venue for the President to defend himself against the serious allegations of official misconduct, including but not limited to apparent attempts at obstruction of justice in the removal of Mr. Comey in order to relieve the "pressure" the President was feeling from investigations related to his campaign's ties to Russian meddling in America's most recent presidential election."

"The best thing to do is to let Robert Mueller do his job", Ryan said.

"I mean, these are people who are going to be after [President Donald] Trump", Gingrich told ABC News Chief Anchor George Stephanopoulos on "Good Morning America" today, adding that he believes the investigation should be curtailed given the biases associated with the case.

"You can raise those concerns" to both Mueller and the DOJ, Rosenstein told Graham.

A day earlier, high-profile supporters of Trump were turning on Mueller, the man charged with investigating Russian interference in the " election and possible collusion with Trump's campaign. His name is Jay Sekulow and you should know who he is.

The president, therefore, would have to direct Rosenstein to fire Mueller - or, somewhat more extravagantly, Trump could order the special-counsel regulations repealed and then fire Mueller himself.

Attorneys general of the past did not shy away from this committee's questions, regardless of the topic, regardless of the party.

The public testimony Tuesday before the Senate Intelligence committee should yield Sessions' most extensive comments to date on questions that have dogged his entire tenure as attorney general and that led him three months ago to step aside from the Russian Federation probe.
