Russia probe: Deputy AG wouldn't fire Mueller if unlawful

At a separate hearing Tuesday, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein declared he'd seen no basis for dismissing Mueller, the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director he appointed as special counsel after Sessions' recusal.

Statements made by Trump's friend Christopher Ruddy set off many new questions Monday night.

"As I understand it, the special-counsel regulations require termination only 'for cause, '" Wright said.

"I think he's considering perhaps terminating the special counsel", Ruddy told PBS NewsHour Monday night, though he went on to say he thinks, personally, it would be a bad idea.

Trump himself does not have the authority to directly fire the special counsel.

"He is unnecessarily allowing it to fester, and that is creating more chaos around the Russian Federation investigation", Swalwell said on Tuesday. A special counsel is much harder to fire.

"The chain of command for the special counsel is only directly to the attorney general - and in this case, the acting attorney general", he said.

In a February meeting, Comey said, Trump told Sessions and other administration officials to leave the room before asking him to drop a probe into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn's contacts with Russian Federation.

In his latest flagrant slap to the face of American rule of law, Donald Trump has reportedly considered firing special investigator Robert Mueller, apparently for the mere fact that he is investigating Donald Trump. The answer depends on the reasons Trump gives for firing Mueller, the manner in which he does it, the precise reaction in DOJ, and what the nation's reaction is.

Mueller has been widely respected by many in Washington from both sides of the aisle, but not everyone is a fan.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, an informal adviser to the President, questioned whether the special counsel investigation would be impartial.

"Republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair", Gingrich tweeted after praising Mueller's integrity in recent weeks. Look who he is hiring.check fec reports.

"I think he should let Bob Mueller do his job, do his job independently, and do his job quickly, because I think that that's what he would want to have happen", Ryan told conservative commentator Guy Benson.

Gingrich's comments mark an apparent change of heart, as he previously tweeted his overwhelming support of Mueller, once calling him a "superb choice".

Democratic senators pressed him on the legal rationale for his refusal to discuss those private conversations, as Sessions acknowledged that Trump had not asserted executive privilege around the hearing.

President Trump's personal lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, reportedly bragged to his friends that he played a major role in the firing of USA attorney for the southern district of New York Preet Bharara, ProPublica reports.

And deputy White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said simply: "Chris speaks for himself".

Now, Trump could order Rosenstein to fire Mueller.

Several theories abound so far.
