Ryan Bertrand grabs assist in England's defeat to France

Theresa May to watch on as England and France plan to stand united in Paris

France's midfielder Kylian Mbappe (C) celebrates with team mates after beating England 3-2 during the worldwide friendly football match between France and England at The Stade de France Stadium in Saint-Denis near Paris on June 13, 2017.

England boss Gareth Southgate has challenged the World Cup winning U20s players not to become complacent and make the most of any first-team opportunities they get next term.

Southgate felt the defeat was not all negative for his experimental Three Lions team, which saw Tottenham full-back Kieran Trippier handed his England debut while Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton started before being replaced by Stoke's Jack Butland for the second half.

Varane was penalised for brushing the feet of Alli in the area just after the break, and was dismissed after the VAR (video assistant referee) was called in, before Kane slotted low down the middle of Hugo Lloris' goal. Both sets of players will have a photo together to show solidarity and togetherness.

England wilted considerably under late pressure and, after Mbappe failed to punish a slack pass out from the back by Cahill when he hit the bar, the teenager showed presence of mind to again pierce a flagging backline and tee up Dembele for an emphatic finish 12 minutes from time.

Prior to kickoff, fans at the Stade de France paid tribute to the victims of the recent militant attacks in Manchester and London.

Southgate may not have made his mind up yet, or at least not made his thoughts public, but it is hard to see anyone but Kane as England's long-term skipper.

JOHN STONES: Gareth Southgate's pre-match talk of deploying him in midfield proved a red herring, instead selecting him in England's three-man defence.

However, on 78 minutes, Dembele would get France's third goal of the game, after being set up by Mbappe following some dismal England defending.

France conceded in the dying seconds to lose away in Sweden in their qualifier, but they return home where in their last 18 they've won an impressive 14 times.

The England goalkeeper prevented it getting any worse on a night when Southgate's side struggled.

After a friendly against Spain in March in which France had a goal disallowed and saw a Spain goal given in a 2-0 loss at Stade de France, replay struck again.

The Premier League golden boot victor had not played under Southgate until this get together and it is not hard to see why he is so central to England's plans.

The 23-year-old's extraordinary form has had some England fans thinking it's all a bit too good to be true.

Alli was allowed to chase his own header into the home box, where Varane brought him down.

"We wanted to support France in the match following the attack in Paris, but equally if people don't feel comfortable singing our anthem, then no problem, we understand".
