Sarasota High grad makes history with four-homer game

Scooter Gennett rounds the bases after his fourth home run

Gennett's four home runs landed him a spot in baseball history; he's the first Red and the 17th player in history to hit four out of the park in one game.

A scrappy second baseman who was claimed off waivers from Milwaukee in late March, the 27-year-old began the night with 38 career home runs, including three this season.

He then proceeded to go deep another three times in the contest, marking the first time a Reds player has homered four times in a game, per ESPN Stats & Info. Remarkably, he was the first for any Major League Baseball team to combine four home runs, 10 RBI and five hits in one game.

ARLINGTON, Texas - Joey Gallo clubbed his team-leading 17th home run as Texas snapped a four-game losing streak.

"It's wonderful, especially since he's not an everyday player for us", manager Bryan Price said, according to the AP. Oh, and Gennett is also the first Red to ever do it.

CHICAGO - Jake Arrieta pitched two-hit ball into the seventh inning, and Anthony Rizzo drove in four runs as the surging Chicago Cubs beat Miami for a season-high fifth straight win.

"He had a career night, a great night", said Adam Wainwright, who gave up Gennett's second career grand slam.

With really nowhere else to go in this recap but continuing to circle back on Gennett's night, I'll highlight the long solo home run that Stephen Piscotty hit to prevent the Cardinals from complete embarrassment (bear with me, I'm being nice).

The Reds pounded Wainwright (6-4), who tied a career high by allowing nine earned runs in 3 2/3 innings. He hit.324 with six home runs as a rookie in 2013, but he posted a below-average.729 OPS last season, despite 14 home runs in 136 games. After he smacked his fourth home run, Gennett said he "kind of laughed" as he rounded first base, no doubt as incredulous as the rest of us at what he'd done. With one more potential at-bat, would Gennett get his chance at four homers? "He nearly beat us by himself tonight".

In the fourth inning, he returned for a two-run blast off of John Grant. He had only one prior multi-homer game, during a 22-game stretch in which he hit.429 with 33 hits.

The Reds have won three in a row against the Cardinals for the first time since 2015. Cincinnati LHP Tony Cingrani was reinstated from the 10-day disabled list and RHP Lisalverto Bonilla was optioned to Triple-A Louisville. Bronson Arroyo will get the start in game three and is 3-4 with a 6.24 ERA and 36 strikeouts this season.

Mike Clevinger (2-3) allowed five runs in four innings for Cleveland. He is 9-4 career against Cincinnati.

Baltimore trailed 4-1 after six innings and 5-3 in the ninth before coming back.
