Scottish National Party sees steep losses

Even defeat in the 2014 independence referendum turned into success, as more than 100,000 new members joined the SNP, paving the way to winning all but three of Scotland's 59 seats in the following year's general election.

After Prime Minister Theresa May called a snap election, the Conservatives, Labour and the Liberal Democrats focused their campaigns in Scotland on preserving the 300-year old union.

The First Minster said her push for a second referendum "undoubtedly" played a part shocking results for the SNP, which saw the party lose more than a third of its seats. She has presided over chaos over the previous year, the result of this election shows that people don't trust her.

This is her opportunity to do so - and I urge her to take it immediately.

"But overall the results in Scotland show the SNP will have won a majority of seats in this country and a majority of the vote - something which I suspect the Prime Minister would like to be able to claim in the early hours of this morning but may not be able to do so".

She said: "I'm disappointed at the SNP losses but I'm pleased that we've won the election".

1/5 Congratulations to all newly elected MPs.

The result - which Sturgeon described as "disappointing" - raises serious questions about whether the SNP will push ahead with its pledge to hold a second referendum on independence.

With pro-union parties making gains across the board and the SNP share of the vote in several Scottish seats falling significantly, this could be a sign that the huge gains made by the nationalist, pro-independence party in the 2015 election "may be reverting back to Conservative and Labour", pollster Marcus Roberts told CNN.

On Friday Ms Davidson said the Government must deliver "an open Brexit, not a closed one, which puts our country's economic growth first".

The Scottish Conservatives say they are now Scotland's main opposition to the SNP.

"There is clearly uncertainty around Brexit and independence which clearly will be factor in tonight's results", she said.

It is the policy of both the Conservative party and the UK Labour party to respect the Brexit referendum result.

Nicola Sturgeon, Scotland's first minister and leader of the Scottish National Party, speaks during a news conference at Bute House in Edinburgh on June 9.

Sturgeon added a "hard Brexit" must be abandoned after the election and also paid tribute to her Alex Salmond.

Ms Black became the youngest MP when she won the seat in 2015 at the age of 20, ousting then Labour shadow foreign secretary Douglas Alexander.

Mr Vaizey said he hoped the election result would soften Mrs May's stance on Brexit, adding: "I hope in the next few days we will see a clear acknowledgement that a "no deal is better than a bad deal" is off the table, that we are going for a Brexit that is going to secure jobs and investment". In March, Sturgeon won a vote in the Scottish parliament to have the powers to hold another vote on leaving the United Kingdom when the terms of the UK's Brexit deal are known.
