Sessions confirms part of Comey's story about private talk with Donald Trump

The U.S. Secret Service said Monday it doesn't have any recordings or transcripts of any tapes recorded within President Donald Trump's White House, a disclosure that failed to rule out whether any tapes exist of Trump's conversations with ousted FBI Director James Comey.

Comey's frank rejection of Trump's stated reasons for firing him - "lies, plain and simple" - was followed by his potentially damaging evidence that the president had tried to put pressure on him to drop an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn's alleged links to Russian Federation.

Trump issued a threat to former FBI Director James Comey in early May, warning that Comey "better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"

The pro-Comey camp includes Chicago Tribune columnist Clarence Page, who argues that Trump's claim of vindication is premature.

The Trump-Comey battle already has a look of the fight-to-the-death about it.

He was a nut-job and the American people have been witness to one of the worst and most disingenuous politically motivated players of all time. Asked about the possibility of such tapes, Trump told reporters on Friday, "Well, I'll tell you about that maybe sometime in the very near future". Jeff Sessions will testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee on Tuesday, and his testimony could be the most explosive so far.

On Friday, after explosive testimony from Comey in Congress repeated the claims that Trump pressured him over Flynn, Trump responded angrily, calling Comey a liar. "Like many of our government betters, Comey forgot he was a public servant", writes New York Post columnist Michael Goodwin.

Comey said he had hoped releasing the information via the media would prompt the appointment of a special counsel to handle the Russian Federation probe, a ploy that ultimately proved successful.

The president has suggested several times, but not confirmed, that tapes of his private talks with Comey exist - a prospect the ex-FBI chief has emphatically welcomed.

"This is unprecedented in our history... the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director was the source of a leak", Sekulow said.

Reporters with editors to please pressed to know what "shortly" means. All this was done under oath to speak the truth with factual records to corroborate Comey's statement.
