Sessions Confirms Some Facts About Comey's Private Trump Chat

Sessions appeared before the committee for the first time since recusing himself from the Russian Federation investigation, but will face questions from Democrats about why he still played a role in the firing of FBI Director James Comey, which Trump later said was motivated by the probe into Moscow's meddling the last year's election. From that point, February 10th, until I announced my formal recusal on March 2nd, I was never briefed on any investigative details and did not access information about the investigation; I received only the limited information that the Department's career officials determined was necessary to inform my recusal decision.

Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., opened his questioning of Attorney General Jeff Sessions by saying he thinks the American people are exhausted of officials "stonewalling" Congress in hearings. He vowed to defend his honor "against scurrilous and false allegations".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions came out swinging in a dramatic appearance before a Senate committee Tuesday, branding any claims that he had helped or was aware of any collusion with Russian officials to interfere in the 2016 election as an "appalling and detestable lie".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is contradicting fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey's testimony about his concerns over a meeting he had with Trump.

Sessions also told the committee that Comey did not tell him that President Trump brought up Michael Flynn when they were alone in the Oval Office. "If there were not good cause, it wouldn't matter to me what anybody says".

The former Alabama senator put in a shaky performance under questioning from his former colleagues during his confirmation hearing. Sessions said the Senate intel committee was the "appropriate forum" for such questions. He never, he insisted, knew anything about the Russian Federation probe or had any role in it.

Here's why Sessions is at the center of so much, and here's how he can help us better understand the still-unraveling Trump-Russia-FBI investigation. He says he stepped aside because Justice Department rules prevent such a conflict of interest.

And while he had recused himself from the Russian Federation probe, Sessions insisted, "I did not recuse myself from defending my honor against scurrilous and false allegations".

The statement indicated that Sergey Kislyak, the Russian ambassador to the United States, was at the event, sitting in the front row, and would have probably crossed paths with Sessions at a private reception.

"Why don't you tell me?" There are none, Sen.

Wyden then attempted to shift away after the outburst, but Sessions pulled him back in for a sharp counter-punch. These false attacks, the innuendo, and the leaks, you can be sure, will not intimidate me.

Speaking at a news conference, Ryan said he knows Mueller and his team and has confidence in his investigation.

He also has vented frustration to aides on Sessions' decision to recuse himself from the Russian Federation investigation, a decision that led to Rosenstein's appointment of a special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, a former FBI director.

California Sen. Dianne Feinstein told Rosenstein that she believes it would be "catastrophic" if special counsel Robert Mueller were fired on the orders of President Donald Trump. And he can expect questions about his involvement in Comey's May 9 firing, the circumstances surrounding his decision to recuse himself from the FBI's investigation, and whether any of his actions - such as interviewing candidates for the FBI director position or meeting with Trump about Comey - violated his recusal pledge.

Comey himself had a riveting appearance before the same Senate panel last week, with some key moments centered on Sessions.

"I don't think that's a question for me to answer", Rosenstein responded.

The high stakes of Tuesday's hearing prompted speculation that Sessions would protect his private conversations with Trump by declaring executive privilege.

Sessions raised his voice to the Democratic senator pressing him for an answer, insisting there were no such reasons. He asserted that "I am protecting the right of the president to assert if it he chooses and there may be other privileges that may apply". Prior to the speech, I attended a reception with my staff that included at least two dozen people and President Trump.
