Sessions' testimony on Tuesday will be public

U.S. attorney general to face questions on Comey firing Russia

Asked Monday if the White House thought Sessions should invoke executive privilege to avoid answering questions about his conversations with Trump, presidential spokesman Sean Spicer replied, "It depends on the scope of the questions".

The Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence announced Monday the hearing will be held in open session Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. Sessions is expected to take questions from senators about meetings with the Russian Ambassador and about his involvement in the firing of former FBI Director James Comey.

Senators on that committee are expected to question Sessions about his meetings with Russians - a topic that has come under increased scrutiny amid investigations into Russian meddling in the USA presidential election.

Sessions recused himself from the inquiry in March after media reports that he had been in two previously undisclosed meetings previous year with Russian ambassador Sergei Kislyak.

According to Politico, Sessions is sending Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to the public briefing and will instead speak to the House and Senate Intelligence Committees on Tuesday afternoon in a closed session. Third, it says he was involved in the firing of Comey, and the president said Comey was sacked because of Russian Federation.

The Justice Department ultimately agreed to a Tuesday public hearing in an attempt to show there's nothing to hide and nothing controversial about Sessions' interactions with Russian officials, officials said.

Like many top USA officials did last week, Sessions is expected to claim executive privilege, insisting that it would not be appropriate to publicly discuss private talks he had with the president.

A Justice Department spokeswoman said Sessions requested the open setting because "he believes it is important for the American people to hear the truth directly from him".

Comey's dramatic testimony drew invective from his former boss on Twitter, with Trump dismissing him as a leaker on Friday and a coward on Sunday. The former senator from Alabama told lawmakers at his January confirmation hearing that he had not met with Russians during the campaign.

The Justice Department has said that Sessions was at the Mayflower that day, but there were no private or side conversations between the two. The White House has denied any collusion with Moscow.

Comey testified that the FBI investigation into possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign did not extend to Trump himself during the time Comey was leading the FBI.

He was questioned over his claim that President Trump asked him to "let go" of the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Specifically, Trump rejected Comey's assertion that he demanded loyalty from the Federal Bureau of Investigation director and asked him to back off the probe of Flynn.

Sessions' appearance before the intelligence committee is an indication of just how much the Russian Federation investigation has shaded his tenure.

Sessions later amended his statement to say he did meet with Kislyak "a couple" of times, and in tomorrow's testimony he is expected to say that he mistakenly didn't think of those meetings when he first answered the question posed to him before the Senate.

Fellow Republicans, meanwhile, pressed Trump to come clean about whether he has tapes of private conversations with fired FBI Director James Comey and provide them to Congress if he does - or possibly face a subpoena. Comey was leading that probe.

She said Sessions should also testify before the Judiciary Committee, because it was better suited to explore legal questions of possible obstruction. Feinstein is the top Democrat on that panel and a member of both.
