Sessions to Contradict Comey on Remaining Silent About Trump Contacts

Invoking of executive privilege for administration employees is typically formally announced by the attorney general, but it's not exactly clear who would make the formal announcement for Sessions, said Michael Bahar, former Democratic staff director for the House intelligence committee and former White House lawyer.

In his dramatic appearance before former colleagues, Sessions contradicted a contention made by Comey at a hearing before the same panel last week. I would assume, given the furor over what, exactly, McCain was talking about in his questioning of Comey last week, he will be better briefed and more to the point this week.

Attorney General Jeff Session, right, and Vice President Mike Pence attend a Cabinet meeting with President Donald Trump, Monday, June 12, 2017, in the Cabinet Room of the White House in Washington. Senators of both parties were frustrated by evasive answers they received last week from Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and other intelligence officials.

They also said they are grateful he "will finally be with people who love him".

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions recently wrote a letter to congress asking them to eliminate federal medical marijuana protections that have been in place for almost four years. Some say he perjured himself. Sessions says Comey firing was all about Clinton emails. His failure to disclose meetings with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak forced him to later amend his testimony and added fuel to the Russia intrigue swirling around Washington.

The Idaho Republican was one of the most skeptical senators regarding Comey's testimony last week.

"He didn't recall this, but I responded to his comment by agreeing that the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Justice needed to be careful to follow department policy regarding appropriate contacts with the White House", Sessions said. Brian Schatz about the scope of Sessions' recusal, Rosenstein said Sessions "actually does not know what we're investigating, and I'm not going to be talking about it publicly". As he prepares to testify in front of his old colleagues on Tuesday, Sessions is expected to be pressed about the independence of the Justice Department, why Comey found his inclusion in the Russian Federation investigation so "problematic", and whether his recollections confirm Comey's testimony.

Committee chairman Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina laid out questions that he wanted addressed, including Sessions' meetings with Russian officials or proxies while working for the Trump campaign or as Attorney General. A Trump confidant, Chris Ruddy, told "PBS NewsHour" on Monday that the president was weighing whether to fire the special counsel now heading up the investigation, former FBI Director Robert Mueller.

Wyden said Monday that Sessions hasn't engaged in anything close to a real recusal. "When you're recusing yourself, you are stepping aside and this sure doesn't look like it". Trump has denied that he said that. But when Comey, who was in charge of the investigation, was fired, there was Sessions once again, front and center with a letter to the president saying "a fresh start is needed at the leadership of the FBI". Sessions formally recused himself from the Russia investigation after it was revealed that he had misled Congress about his contacts with the Russian ambassador, but he nonetheless played a role in Comey's firing.

In recent days, Trump supporters such as Newt Gingrich and Rush Limbaugh have questioned if Mueller can conduct a fair inquiry.

And would Sessions and Rosenstein risk being fired themselves and refuse to fire Mueller? President Obama worked against [Israeli Prime Minister] Netanyahu in his re-election and we know President Obama favored [the liberal candidate] Macron in the French election here recently. Susan Collins, R-Maine, a member of that committee, referring to the existence of any recordings.

"Senators, I'm not going to follow any orders unless I believe those are lawful and appropriate orders", Rosenstein said. "The attorney general's involvement is highly questionable, to be blunt, and I think those questions will be raised".
