South Korea's president suggests 2030 World Cup bid with North Korea

Though parts of the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system are already in place, Moon last week suspended further deployment following a furious campaign of economic sanctions and diplomatic protests by Beijing against the USA missile shield, dealing a blow to Washington's regional security policy.

The device, equipped with a camera and a 64-GB memory card, was seized on June 9 in a mountainous area near the border between the two countries after it apparently crashed, reports Efe news.

A North Korean soldier escaped to South Korea on Tuesday (June 13) evening by walking across the Demilitarised Zone that bisects the peninsula, Seoul's Defence Ministry said.

A suspected North Korean drone crashed a few miles from the DMZ after being observed taking photos of THAAD installations.

South Korea is deploying the US anti-missile defence system in the Seongju region, about 250 km (155 miles) from the border with North Korea, to counter a growing missile threat from the North. Tensions have run particularly high between the rivals as North Korea has ramped up the pace of its ballistic missiles tests and refuses to disavow the possibility of a sixth nuclear weapons test, defying sanctions by the U.N. Security Council and threats of military action by the USA, which backs South Korea and regional ally Japan.

South Korea warned Japan on Monday to exercise caution when making remarks about bilateral ties, including the issue of Korean "comfort women" forced to work in Japanese military brothels during World War Two.

Key components of the American Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense system, known as THAAD, are in place to protect South Korea from a North Korean missile launch. US President Donald Trump has vowed to "solve the problem" of North Korea by putting an end to its nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Many see it as an unnecessary provocation of China, Russia, and North Korea.

In a speech marking South Korea's Memorial Day last Tuesday, President Moon honored national heroes and veterans, including those who fought in the Vietnam War.

It is not the first time a suspected North Korean drone has been caught following a surveillance mission.

The South Korean president has been open to more dialogue with North Korea since he was elected on May 10.

The defector, a 42-year-old former third secretary who fled the North's regime in 2015, also claimed Pyongyang has attack drones capable of carrying biological and chemical weapons to Seoul within one hour.

According to 38 North, a Korea-related analysis site maintained by Johns Hopkins University, these recovered drones were largely unsophisticated and followed a preplanned route with limited data-transmitting capabilities.
