Suspected North Korean drone crashes after photographing US missile defence system

"Cho has a good understanding of President Moon's North Korean policy and inter-Korean issues", the presidential office said of the 60-year-old former unification ministry official.

This allows regime-linked individuals repeatedly to conduct illicit behaviour overseas on North Korea's behalf.

The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system, which is created to intercept and destroy ballistic missiles, is being deployed in Seongju in order to protect South Korea from Pyongyang's growing threats.

South Korea's agreement with the United States to deploy the Thaad battery was part of Washington's strategy to dominate the Asia Pacific region and thus "plug the South Korean regime into its project for building its global missile shield", the statement continued.

However, both Washington and Seoul say THAAD is aimed exclusively at defending against North Korea, and poses no threat to China.

North Korea is believed to be operating more than 300 drones for military purposes, either for surveillance or the delivery of attack weapons.

A North Korean soldier escaped to South Korea on Tuesday (June 13) evening by walking across the Demilitarised Zone that bisects the peninsula, Seoul's Defence Ministry said.

Previously, Cho played a role in opening the complex in the North Korean border city of Kaesong, which opened in 2004 as the symbol of inter-Korean reconciliation.

The war of words between North Korea and President Donald Trump has escalated, with Pyongyang calling out Trump by name and threatening to soon test an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) "capable of precisely striking any place of the USA mainland".

"Since assuming leadership in North Korea, Kim Jong-un averaged 10.8 missile tests per year in the 2012-2016 period".

"This is because its hostile policy will end in futile when the DPRK conducts the test-fire of an ICBM capable of precisely striking any place on the U.S. mainland", an opinion piece in the state-run Rodong Sinmun stated on Monday.

"North Korea's drones are small, so they're hard to detect with our existing radar".

The revelations come a week after the US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson visited New Zealand, asking for all countries with links to North Korea to apply pressure on the rogue state to end its nuclear program.

Officials from the spaceport on Kodiak Island will host a town hall meeting Wednesday to answer questions about the Missile Defense Agency's plans to test a U.S.

The alleged spying incident from North Korea comes around the same time when South Korean President Moon Jae-In called for a halt in the rollout of THAAD missile system pending environmental impact reports, which could take a year to complete.
