Talks Continue Between DUP And Conservatives

Britain's prime minister has begun talks with a Northern Ireland-based party Tuesday to see if they can create an alliance to push through the Conservative Party's agenda after a disastrous snap election left her short of a majority in Parliament. That could be done this time tomorrow morning or dinner time today. May had called the vote early in hopes of strengthening her majority going into talks on exiting the European Union, but instead found herself in negotiations with a small party in Northern Ireland in order to stay in power.

"They are obliged to be so in the wording of the Good Friday and other agreements but unless an Irish government is keeping them to that responsibility, they will behave as they have behaved for as long as I have lived and longer than that".

The talks were paused over the General Election campaign.

Mr Brokenshire made clear the reintroduction of direct rule from Westminster is on the cards if an agreement does not materialise by that date.

With Northern Ireland having been without a powersharing executive since March and without a first and deputy first minister since January, a new three-week process to salvage devolution has begun in Belfast.

The DUP leader Arlene Foster will discuss a deal with the prime minister to prop up her Tory minority administration after the government admitted that the Queen's Speech, due next Monday, might have to be delayed.

Developments at Westminster have placed another question mark over the already faltering process.

The dispute has prompted renewed calls for a chairman from outside the United Kingdom and Ireland to be appointed.

DUP leaders, Arlene Foster and Nigel Dodds, are now in the Westminister to discuss the possibility of post election ties.

The historic accord commits the UK Government to demonstrate "rigorous impartiality" when dealing with competing political views in the region.

However Lord Trimble, leader of the UUP from September 1995 until May 2005 and one of the architects of the Good Friday Agreement, said the British government was also "taking a risk".

The party - led by Michelle O'Neill in Northern Ireland - have occupied offices in Westminster since 2002 but its MPs have never taken up their seats in the House of Commons. The Conservatives are considering an arrangement in which the Northern Ireland party backs May on the budget and her confidence motions.

"What we are doing in relation to the productive talks that we are holding with the Democratic Unionist Party is ensuring that it is possible to, with their support, give the stability to the UK Government that I think is necessary at this time".

Sinn Fein, the SDLP and Alliance have all made clear they will not accept Mr Brokenshire as a talks facilitator.

Leader of Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) Arlene Foster arrives at 10 Downing Street in London, for a meeting with Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May, Tuesday June 13, 2017.
