The One Quote No One Noticed During Jeff Sessions' Testimony

On the same day, we provided that reporter with the information related to the meeting I and my staff had held in my Senate office with Ambassador Kislyak, as well as the brief encounter in July after a speech that I had given during the convention in Cleveland, Ohio.

Sessions is likely to be asked about his conversations with Ambassador Sergey Kislyak and whether there were more encounters that should have been made public.

During a contentious hearing of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, the former Trump campaign adviser also clashed with several senators, including Sen.

The attorney general on March 2 recused himself from the FBI investigation into Russia's role in the election, saying he felt he was required to do so because he had been a prominent figure in Trump's campaign.

Sen. Tom Cotton was correct to point out that few Democrats asked Sessions about the issue at hand: possible Russian collusion on the part of the Trump campaign.

The dramatic congressional standoff with the nation's top law enforcement official came on the heels of last week's testimony of former FBI Director James Comey before the same committee.

In a combative and emotional Senate hearing, Sessions beseeched his former Senate colleagues to believe him when he said he did not hold a meeting with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak at a speech by then-candidate Donald Trump at the Mayflower hotel past year.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Attorney General Jeff Sessions heatedly denied on Tuesday having an undisclosed meeting with Russia's ambassador to the US and declared it was a "detestable and appalling lie" to suggest he was aware of or took part in any collusion between Russian Federation and the election campaign that sent Donald Trump to the White House. "I'm not sure what was in his mind specifically".

While it may have lacked the drama of the Jim Comey hearing, the Sessions session had its moments, given his crucial role running the Justice Department.

"I received only the limited information that the department's career officials determined was necessary to inform my recusal decision", Sessions said.

Sanders confirmed that the President did interview Robert Mueller as a candidate for FBI director the day before he was named special counsel of the federal investigation into the Trump campaign and Russian Federation ties.

Heated exchange between Sen. Wyden, Attorney General Sessions
On Tuesday, Attorney General Sessions insisted his response to Franken, when viewed in context, was accurate. He has acknowledged two meetings a year ago with Russia's ambassador to the U.S., Sergei Kislyak .

Risch also suggested that the Intelligence Committee has wasted large amounts of time looking into a report of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation that turned out to be false. A concurrent probe is also ongoing in the House.

Meanwhile, I can say based on my reporting that Mueller is not anxious at all about his position, and does not believe the criticism of whether he has a conflict was orchestrated.

Sessions originally said that he disaffiliated himself simply because he was an adviser to Trump during the campaign, but doubt was cast on that explanation when Comey testified last week and said he had thought Sessions would recuse himself earlier than he did for "problematic" reasons that needed to be discussed in a closed session. And he answered his own question by saying, well, I didn't meet with or communicate with the Russians during the campaign. And we talked about the real principle that is at stake is one that I have some appreciation for as having spent 15 years in the department of justice, 12 as United States attorney.

The Missouri Republican, who so far has voted with the president 100 percent of the time, is one of eight Republicans on the intensely watched Senate Intelligence Committee.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer echoed calls from his colleagues to remove Attorney General Jeff Sessions from his post while appearing on MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show" Tuesday.

Sessions told Dianne Feinstein that he wrote a letter to Trump supporting the firing of Comey because he was asked to do so.

"I'm not able to invoke executive privilege, that's the President's prerogative", Sessions reiterated. He's not interested in backroom testimony... because he is about telling the truth.

That answer effectively blockaded most of the interesting lines of questioning, including the potentially explosive issue of whether the White House is considering issuing pardons to people being investigated in the Russian Federation probe.

"I am following historic policies of Department of Justice", Sessions continued.

Mr Sessions said: "He didn't recall this, but I responded to his comment by agreeing that the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Justice needed to be careful to follow department policy". Heinrich said, "Your silence speaks volumes".

What was refreshing was that the attorney general's testimony was that he didm't read a dry, lawyerly statement, but seemed genuinely outraged that a shadow had been cast over his reputation. Now, in order to do this, Donald Trump would have to order the deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein, to fire Mueller.
