US Attorney General Jeff Sessions To Testify In Public Russia Hearing

Attorney General Jeff Sessions has asked for his testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee to be public. Comey testified that in the privacy of the Oval Office, the President asked him to let the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn drop.

Until the panel chairman's statement it had been unclear whether Mr Sessions would testify in an open or closed setting.

Comey's hints to the Senate Intelligence Committee, however, suggest that he knew of more contacts or other relationships that made him and the rest of the top Federal Bureau of Investigation leaders expect that Sessions would take himself out of the game.

Following Comey's public testimony last Thursday, he told senators in a closed hearing that afternoon that Sessions may have had a third interaction with Russia's ambassador to the USA, according to people familiar with the briefing.

Mr Sessions, a former senator and an early supporter of Mr Trump's election campaign, will be the most senior government official to testify to the committee on the Russian Federation issue.

A friend of the president suggested a day earlier that Trump was considering such an ouster.

He is scheduled to testify from 7.30pm Irish time. Multiple reports have cited sources saying that central to that split was Trump's belief that Sessions should never have recused himself from overseeing the Russian Federation probe.

Mueller also won votes of support Tuesday from the top two Republicans in Congress, House Speaker Paul Ryan of Wisconsin and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, both of whom said they have confidence in him.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters later that Trump thought Sessions "did a very good job" and was especially "strong" on denying any collusion between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.

Former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer advised Trump to "stop talking" Sunday before he finds himself in legal trouble.

Yes, today marks the first time Sessions, the nation's top law enforcement official, will be questioned in a hearing that will likely be devoted to all things Russian Federation. How could an attorney general who said he would take himself out of the Russian Federation investigation play a role in firing the officer who was leading it?

Kinzinger, who declined to endorse Trump during last year's election and has criticized him before for not staying on message as President, said it would best if Trump allows the investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 presidential election to move forward.

President Trump and the White House have still not given a definitive answer on whether "tapes" of the president's conversations with James Comey exist, and Senator Susan Collins is a bit stunned by that. "No more game playing", Schumer argued.

"I don't know whether it will happen - don't know whether it's going to be public", Sen.

However, he said he thought there was "absolutely evidence to begin a case" into the matter.
