Trump invited to testify about interactions with Comey

In a letter to the U-T ("Comey has cleared Trump of collusion", June 9), the writer cited the U-T's New York Times article "Comey: Trump tried to influence probe" (June 8) as slanderous.

"The inspector general at the Department of Justice is going to look at this, and they're going to write a report, and I think it's going to be a scathing report, condemning both the attorney general and the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director for failing to do their job protecting the Federal Bureau of Investigation", he added. Trump himself, appearing alongside the president of Romania on Friday, attacked Comey and said some of his testimony wasn't true.

He said Trump even kicked his senior staff out of the Oval Office, and the staff appeared sheepish over it, right before he expressed his hope that the police might leave the Russia-friendly Flynn alone.

Earlier in his press conference, Trump said he was "happy" with parts of Comey's testimony, including that the former FBI director said he had assured the president he wasn't personally under investigation regarding the Russian meddling in the election and possible collusion by Trump campaign aides.

"It's my judgment that I was sacked because of the Russian Federation investigation", Mr Comey said toward the end of more than two hours of testimony before the Senate intelligence committee. However, many believe that the decision is connected with the probe into alleged ties of Trump's campaign team to Russian Federation, as Comey reportedly was seeking funding to extend the bureau's inquiry. "You're going to be very disappointed when you hear the answer, don't worry". He said he had no such concern about the veracity of the other two presidents he served, George W. Bush and Barack Obama.

In another piece, Vox asked nine legal experts to weigh in on the Comey testimony. Who would do that?. I mean think of it, I hardly know the man.

I once thought that no matter how low Trump would go, the GOP would compensate by placing the bar even lower.

"In my experience of prosecuting cases, when a robber held a gun to somebody's head, and said, "I hope you will give me your wallet, "' Harris said, "the word 'hope" was not the most operative word at that moment".

"Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication", Trump wrote, suggesting that Comey had committed perjury.

Fox News placed first Thursday in terms of cable-news audiences, Nielsen reported.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Friday boasted of the GOP's accomplishments under Trump thus far, and promised more to come, making no mention of Comey in a speech.

Trump called the controversy "just an excuse" by Democrats who had lost the presidential election. "He's everything that's wrong in Washington", Lewandowski said.

Comey asked, in his testimony: Why would the president specifically make sure nobody else was around whenever he asked him for loyalty, or for Comey to publicly defend him, or to lay off on Flynn?

Comey is unlikely to play any sort of direct role in the investigation now led by special counsel Robert Mueller, his predecessor as FBI director.

The February meeting was one of several one-on-one encounters that Mr Comey said made him feel such intense discomfort that he felt compelled to document them in memos.

After Comey's testimony, Trump knows better than anyone that threat is real and gathering.

The White House later declined to provide a timeline for when such an announcement might be made.

On Thursday, Kasowitz, in a brief statement to reporters, denied that Trump told Comey to let the case wither.

The president said Comey's testimony on Thursday before the Senate Intelligence Committee mostly vindicated his previous claims about their interactions. They sent a separate request to Trump's White House counsel, Don McGahn, for any record the White House had of their meetings. Should they believe the G-man who once threatened to quit his job as a United States attorney on principle and whose former employees can't find anything bad to say about him?

Opposition Democrats have said that the leaks occurred after Comey was sacked and no longer a government official.
