Trump on counterattack after Comey testimony

What you see depends on who you are

The U.S. House Intelligence Committee leaders sent a letter to the White House today, asking if any tape recordings exist of conversations between ousted FBI Director James Comey and President Donald Trump.

"Yesterday showed no collusion, no obstruction", Mr Trump said in the White House Rose Garden, during a news conference with the visiting Romanian president.

Reporters have been pushing the White House in recent weeks to see if tapes exist containing private conversations between Trump and former FBI Director James Comey, who the president fired last month.

The way Comey understood his conversations with the president, Trump asked Comey for three things: his loyalty, to "lift the cloud" of any perception the president was under investigation and to drop the FBI's investigation into Michael Flynn.

A day before Comey's testimony, two top spy chiefs, National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers and Dan Coats, director of national intelligence, both refused to answer when Intelligence Committee members inquired whether Trump had ever "asked" them to help ease the probe.

"I'll tell you about [it] over a fairly short period of time", he said.

A person close to Trump's legal team said a complaint would be filed next week with the Justice Department over the leak. "But I can't imagine that that issue is going to arise" with Mueller, said Sekulow. Trump said in a tweet last month after Comey was sacked. "Former Director Comey testified that he expected the Attorney General to recuse himself from the Russian Federation investigation weeks before the Attorney General made that decision himself, because of matters that could not be discussed publicly".

President Donald Trump has been invited by a top Democratic leader to testify before the Senate over his relationship with sacked Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey and the probe into the alleged Russian meddling in the USA polls. During the Friday press conference where Trump said he'd be willing to speak under oath, the president said only that he would be "glad" to speak with Mueller. When asked if he had covertly recorded his conversations with Comey, as Trump had suggested in a tweet shortly after firing Comey last month, the president was coy.

"Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication", Trump wrote. The president and his aides have complained about leaks, purportedly from the intelligence community, throughout the investigations by the FBI and Congress into Russia's meddling in the 2016 USA presidential elections and the Trump campaign's contact with Russian officials.

Trump Jr. argued Saturday that Comey was being disingenuous in his description of the meeting.

The Secret Service "handled recording systems within the White House for past presidents", according to the Journal.

Sessions recused himself from any investigations into Russian Federation and it was later reported that Trump "fumed" over the choice. "Even folks who have been his critics don't question his integrity, his commitment to the rule of law and his intelligence", Warner said.
