Two inmates at large in Georgia after two prison guards shot, killed

A pair of Georgia prison guards were fatally shot by prisoners who are now on the run, according to reports.

"We don't know what the outcome is going to be but I suspect it's going to be very risky situation with the next (law enforcement) encounter with the suspects", said Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Vernon Keenan.

Both were being housed at Baldwin State Prison.

How the inmates managed to reach and overpower the guards remains under investigation, Sills said. After disarming the officers, one of the inmates shot and killed them, said Stills, who said about 30 inmates saw what happened.

Gov. Nathan Deal said the state will use all available resources to track the fugitives down. Dubose is described as a white man, 6'1, 140 pounds.

"An attack on any American law enforcement officer is an attack on every American law enforcement officer and the principles we all believe in", he said. Police advise anyone who sees them to call 911. "Rowe is also white, stands 6'1" too, and weighs 181 pounds.

Sills also said both men were still armed Tuesday with the Glock pistols they stole from the murdered guards. They are armed. They are risky.

"We've made contact with family members, but there is no evidence he has made contact with anyone", Patton said.

In Washington, Rod Rosenstein, deputy director of the U.S. Department of Justice, referred to the killings while speaking to the Senate Appropriations Committee.

"Both officers", the corrections department said in a statement, "were known for their unwavering commitment to their job and their love of family". He was serving time in Baldwin State Prison for an armed robbery in Bibb County, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections website.

DuBose was imprisoned after being found guilty of armed robbery, aggravated assault, credit card fraud and theft by taking.

But Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills says the fugitives did commit a burglary in Madison, about 25 miles north of the spot where they previously seen carjacking a motorist after escaping from a prison bus.

The sheriff added, "I would suggest that they surrender before we find them". Rowe has been in prison since June 2002 and Dubose has been in prison since July 2015. "We've offered assistance, but they said they had enough help", Oconee County Sheriff Scott Berry said early Tuesday.
