Two US soldiers killed in attack by Afghan soldier

A fourth soldier was wounded and is being treated for injuries.

"The Afghan commando was also killed in counterattack". The shooter was shot dead by other Afghan soldiers. The group named the attacker as Obaidullah from Kunar province, releasing a photo purporting to be him. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid claimed on Twitter that four U.S. soldiers were killed in the attack.

"In (a) joint US-Afghan military operation".

President Donald Trump was briefed on the shootings, a White House spokesman said, but as of Saturday evening there had been no comment from the President.

Vice President Mike Pence held a listening session in Milwaukee on the impact of the Affordable Care Act on small business and families in Wisconsin. But suffice it to say, when heroes fall, Americans grieve.

A USA source confirming the incident although details are scarce. The soldiers' identities weren't immediately available nor were their military branch.

Incidents of Afghan forces attacking coalition troops were major problem several years ago, but has died down with the addition of new security measures for the forces.

Western officials say most such attacks stem from personal grudges and cultural misunderstandings rather than insurgent plots. Such strikes have bred deep mistrust between local and foreign forces.

The latest counter-ISIS push began in March of this year.

This marked at least the second insider attack-known as a "green-on-blue" attack because of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation color-coding system-of the year.

On Saturday, Afghan officials also confirmed that three policemen had been killed and two others wounded when a United States aircraft opened fire during an operation in Helmand Province.

In the meantime, a U.S military spokesman in Afghanistan told CNN "we are aware of an incident in eastern Afghanistan". The Afghan soldier was killed by return fire.

Omar Zwak, a spokesman for the Helmand governor, put the toll at three policemen killed and two wounded. The Pentagon only stating they've opened an investigation into a shooting.

Taliban insurgents have made widespread gains in Helmand, seizing numerous province's districts and threatening the provincial capital of Lashkar Gah. The US counterterrorism mission is separate from the NATO-led effort to train, advise and assist the Afghan army and police force in its fight against the Taliban.

The Taliban has taken credit for the attack.

The incident took place in the restive Achin district of the eastern Nangarhar province where the US and the Afghan forces were conducting an operation against the IS terrorists.
