U.S. attorney general to testify in Trump-Russia probe

It's Jeff Sessions turn in the hot seat

Attorney General Jeff Sessions is scheduled to appear before the Senate Intelligence Committee less than one week after James Comey told the committee he could not discuss openly certain information about Sessions' recusal from the investigation into Russia's election meddling past year.

Meanwhile, it's becoming harder and harder to support President Trump, who continues to be his administration's worst enemy and main saboteur.

"My sense was the attorney general knew he shouldn't be leaving, which is why he was lingering", Comey said last week.

Following Comey's public testimony last Thursday, he told senators in a closed hearing that afternoon that Sessions may have had a third interaction with Russia's ambassador to the USA, according to people familiar with the briefing.

Comey testified in closed session that Sessions may have had a third, unreported meeting with Russian Ambassador Sergei Kislyak, according to CNN sources.

Media reports last week said Sessions offered to resign because of tensions with the president over his decision to recuse himself from the FBI's Russian Federation probe. And he can expect questions about his involvement in Comey's May 9 firing, the circumstances surrounding his decision to recuse himself from the FBI's investigation, and whether any of his actions - such as interviewing candidates for the FBI director position or meeting with Trump about Comey - violated his recusal pledge.

He did not say whether he would appear in open or closed session.

Senators have questioned why Sessions was involved in Comey's dismissal though Comey was leading the Russian Federation investigation.

When Stephanopoulos asked if Trump would fire special counsel Robert Mueller, Sekulow said he wouldn't speculate on what the president will do. The fact that Sessions would delegate that task showed the Russian Federation investigation was distracting him from his core duties.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Monday an announcement would come "when the president is ready to make it".

On "Fox & Friends" Monday, Conway noted Comey's testimony that Loretta Lynch, as President Barack Obama's attorney general, directed him to describe the FBI probe into Hillary Clinton's email practices as a "matter" and to avoid calling it an investigation. "The nature of the person", he said. One meeting reportedly happened in the summer and another in September. "I was honestly concerned that he might lie about the nature of our meeting, and so I thought it really important to document", the ex-FBI director testified.

The attorney general said early on that as someone who'd been a campaign partner and advocate for the president, he felt it wasn't appropriate for him to be in charge of any inquiry into how it had been conducted.

Trump himself attributed his dismissal of Comey to the Russian Federation probe.

He did not explicitly endorse Sessions' appearance, saying in response to a question, "We're aware of it, and we'll go from there".

The president denied trying to interfere with the investigation and said he would be willing to testify under oath about his interactions with Comey. At his hearing Thursday, Comey reiterated that exchange with Sessions but did not elaborate on whether Sessions made any efforts to intervene. "Totally illegal?" he asked in a tweet.
