UK's May cracks joke about election disaster

Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill, who were the Prime Minister's joint chiefs of staff, resigned amid intense Tory criticism in the wake of the snap election that cost the Conservatives their Commons majority.

The negotiations with the DUP revolve around support from the party on a vote-by-vote basis in parliament, rather than a formal coalition government.

The talks Tuesday with the Democratic Unionist Party follows her apology to Conservative rank-and-file lawmakers in a meeting which signaled she would be more open to consultation, particularly with business leaders demanding answers about the details on Britain's departure from the European Union.

His colleague Sarah Wollaston tweeted: "Conservative MPs all said they were standing with TM".

"The parliamentary arithmetic is such that we are going to have to work with everyone", he said.

A Downing Street spokesman declined to comment.

Some involved in the Irish peace process are alarmed because the 1998 Good Friday peace accords call for the British government to be neutral in the politics of Northern Ireland.

"The last thing anybody wishes to see is one or other of the communities so aggrieved that the hardmen, who are still there lurking in the corners of the communities, decide that they wish to return to some form of violence".

"I am concerned about the deal". I am wary about it.

"To those locally who are complaining the loudest about our position of influence, I say to them that the time for unreasonable behavior and unrealistic demands is over", she said.

Though Foster supported Brexit, she also might demand that May pursue a cushioned exit from the European Union, given her party's wish that a soft border remain between Northern Ireland and Ireland, an European Union member.

May has a busy schedule ahead, with a cabinet meeting on Monday and talks with French President Emmanuel Macron the following day.

Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the opposition Labour Party, which saw its number of parliamentary seats and share of the vote increase, said there could be another election this year or early in 2018 after last Thursday's vote produced no clear victor.

May is under pressure to take on a more cross-party approach to Brexit talks.

As Labour's Shadow Cabinet meets for the first time since the election, Diane Abbott, who stepped aside just days before polling day, revealed that she was diagnosed with with type 2 diabetes two years ago and that is why she took a break.

But Ruth Davidson, the pro-EU leader of the Conservatives in Scotland, called on May to "reopen" the government's Brexit plans.

The Evening Standard edited by Tory former chancellor George Osborne, and the Daily Telegraph, have reported that Cabinet ministers have initiated talks with Labour MPs to secure cross-party backing for a softer Brexit.

The negotiations were due to start on 19 June but Brexit Secretary David Davis has indicated this timetable could slip by a few days amid events in Westminster.

"I find it incredibly self indulgent for the Tory party to be going for this sort of stuff", he said on ITV television.

Meanwhile Denmark's finance minister said he hoped the outcome of the British election would lead to a pause to rethink the direction in which the Brexit negotiations were heading.

"The UK has had a reputation, earned over the generations, for stability and predictability in its government", said a senior executive at a multi-national company listed on the London FTSE 100, speaking on condition of anonymity. He expected London to remain an important financial centre for Europe after Britain had left. "The European citizens in the United Kingdom, we want to get on with as fast as possible because we don't want people to be in a state of anxiety".
