United States defense chief: 'Americans will do the right thing' in Pacific

"North Korea poses a threat to us all", Mattis said on Saturday in a speech to the Shangri-La security dialogue in Singapore, Asia's most high-profile security conference.

"The Security Council is sending a clear message to North Korea today - stop firing ballistic missiles or face the consequences", Haley said.

Among the four entities listed in the resolution are Kangbong Trading Corp., Korea Kumsan Trading Corp., Koryo Bank and the Strategic Rocket Force of the Korean People's Army.

"The Democratic People's Republic of Korea's Ministry of Foreign Affairs resolutely denounces and squarely rejects the USA and the UNSC's anti-North Korea sanctions, which is a vile act of hostility aimed at hampering our nuclear buildup and economically strangling us", the ministry said in a statement carried by the country's state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA). But it differs from the U.S. and its allies on how to rein in the North's rapidly escalating nuclear and ballistic missile program. It fired at least one short-range ballistic missile on May 29, which landed in the sea off its east coast.

The sanctions resolution "is a crafty hostile act with the goal of putting a curb on the DPRK's buildup of nuclear forces, disarming it and causing economic suffocation to it", the foreign ministry spokesman said in the statement carried by its official KCNA news agency on Sunday.

"North Korea's attitude is feeding tensions in a region where we have major economic interest, and we do not want to see an arms race here", Goulard said.

"We oppose countries militarizing artificial islands and enforcing excessive maritime claims unsupported by global law", he said.

This time it is the seventh resolution the Security Council has adopted to impose sanctions on North Korea over its nuclear and missile programs since its first nuclear test in 2006.

Glossing over disagreements, the defense chiefs from Japan and France on Saturday welcomed USA leadership in the Asia-Pacific to manage the nuclear ambitions of North Korea and maintain regional peace.

New US sanctions were announced Thursday in anticipation of the United Nations resolution restricting alleged suppliers to the North Korea's weapons programs, according to the US Treasury.

The North Korea's foreign ministry spokesman was quoted by KCNA news agency as responding to the United Nations' sanctions resolution.

Russia made a decision to support the measure despite Kremlin anger over Washington's move to impose USA sanctions on two Russian firms that do business with North Korea.

"The U.S. steps up its military buildup including modernization of nuclear weapons just in order to obtain exclusive and permanent possession of the most sophisticated weapon system in the world".

Russia's Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin said that North Korea's ballistic missile defense system is a direct threat to the Russians and in the past few months, the repeated missile tests have alarmed the livelihood of all the Russian citizens.
