US Attorney General Sessions calls notion he colluded with Russian Federation 'detestable lie'

Sessions said he recused himself from the Justice Department's current Russian Federation investigation only because of a regulation that required it because of his involvement in the Trump campaign.

US Attorney General Jeff Sessions has appeared at a high-stakes hearing about whether he intentionally misled Congress as a Senate panel probes alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election.

"We also were aware of facts that I can't discuss in an open setting that would make his continued engagement in a Russia-related investigation problematic", Comey told Wyden during his testimony before the Senate intelligence committee on June 8.

"If any brief interaction occurred in passing with the Russian ambassador during that reception, I do not remember it", Sessions said.

In May, when President Donald Trump fired Comey, the president cited a memo Rosenstein wrote that said he believed Comey had mishandled the bureau's investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of private email servers.

"Wait a second, everybody knows there was communication between Russian Federation and Michael Flynn, that's why he was sacked", Colbert says, adding, "Sessions really seems to know nothing, which explains why he was the first senator to endorse Trump".

Sessions recused himself in March from a federal investigation into contacts between Russia and the Trump presidential campaign after acknowledging that he had met twice previous year with the Russian ambassador to the United States.

Donald Trump's Attorney General has denied colluding with Russian Federation to influence the US Presidential election. He denied recusing himself from the investigation because of the meetings with the ambassadors, and said that he didn't hold a meeting a third meeting with a Russian ambassador, offering only, "I may have had an encounter".

Wyden plied Sessions on whether his signing a letter recommending Comey's firing violated his recusal. A few even cut off Sessions mid-answer in order to get a proper response.

Comey recalled that he felt "something big" was about to happen, and "my sense was the attorney general knew he shouldn't be leaving".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions says he never had conversations with FBI Director James Comey about his job performance before Comey's firing. "I can tell you that for absolute certainty".

Sessions testified that Department of Justice rules do not prohibit one-on-one communications between the president and the Federal Bureau of Investigation director. "He clearly wants to protect the president by indicating he hasn't invoked executive privilege". Sessions said. "I am following the historic policies of the Department of Justice".

After a short exchange with Harris, the senator's five minute questioning time expired. However, in his opening remarks Tuesday, Sessions said he did not disclose two meetings with Kislyak because he was responding to Franken's "rambling question".

He also testified that he had no knowledge of any Trump campaign staff having any such conversations.

According to Comey, Trump said of Flynn: "He is a good guy".
