US college student released by North Korea arrives in Ohio

"I never, never should have allowed myself to be lured by the United States administration to commit a crime in this country", Warmbier said in what experts say likely was a response scripted by officials of the dictatorship.

Warmbier was a University of Virginia student when he chose to go to North Korea with a tour group.

Warmbier's parents said in a statement that "we have been told that he has been in that condition since March of 2016". They said they were told he has been in a coma since his trial, when he was last seen in public, and they had learned of this only one week ago.

A USA delegation made up of Yun and a medical team was sent to North Korea on Monday to secure Warmbier's release, the official said, adding that they demanded to visit Warmbier upon arrival in Pyongyang.

A senior USA official said they had received worrying reports on his condition in a North Korean gulag, which prompted talks to bring him home immediately.

CINCINNATI (AP) - An American college student who was released from a North Korean prison is finally home but in a coma and undergoing treatment at an OH hospital where he was taken shortly after arriving on USA soil. The official spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because no formal statement had been released.

His four past trips in 2013 and 2014 generated a storm of publicity, most of it unfavorable, and did little in terms of diplomacy. He said "I'm just trying to open the door".

Rodman, one of the few people to know both of the nuclear-armed leaders, sported a black T-shirt advertising a cybercurrency used to buy and sell marijuana as he talked to reporters briefly before boarding his flight from Beijing to the North Korean capital. US officials last had consular access to Warmbier on March 2, 2016, through the Swedish Embassy in Pyongyang, Nauert said. He was detained in January 2016 at the Pyongyang airport on his way home from visiting the country. Yun then met last week with the North Korean ambassador at the U.N.in NY, where Yun learned about Warmbier's condition.

U.S. Under Secretary of State Thomas Shannon confirmed that Rodman was traveling to North Korea as a private citizen.

"We continue our discussions with the North Korean regime regarding the release of the three other American citizens that have been detained", Tillerson said.

The 22-year-old University of Virginia undergraduate, from Cincinnati, Ohio, was convicted in March 2016 of attempting to steal a propaganda banner from a restricted area of his hotel at the request of an acquaintance.

In the past, North Korea has generally quickly released any American citizens it detained - waiting at most for a US official or statesman to come and to personally bail out detainees.

Three weeks later, North Korea announced it was holding him for a "hostile act" against the state.

"What we're doing is we're calling on everyone, obviously the Chinese government, we're calling on governments around the world" to increase pressure on the North, Tillerson said. The United States does not have a diplomatic mission in North Korea.

Former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who has worked for Warmbier's release with his Center for Global Engagement, said Warmbier has been in a coma for more than a year. Warmbier's family did not respond to calls seeking comment.

Warmbier's parents, who have appeared on Fox News Channel in the past to plead for their son's release, expressed somber gratitude.
