US Refuses to Sign G7 Pledge to Commit to Paris Climate Accord

The first U.N. Ocean Conference ended on Friday with the adoption of a Call to Action, which said: "We are particularly alarmed by the adverse impacts of climate change on the ocean".

The ministers issued a non-binding climate and environment statement attesting to the "irreversibility" of the landmark Paris Agreement and committing to taking a variety of actions to slash greenhouse gas emissions that are warming the planet.

Europe's largest economy and the largest state economy in the US have issued a joint statement of intent to boost climate cooperation and to support the "Under 2 Coalition".

However, having announced its intention to pull out of the Paris accord earlier this month, the United States refused to join its fellow G7 members in backing sections of the communique covering climate change and Multilateral Development Banks.

In the communique, the USA added a footnote saying it's taking its own steps to reduce the country's carbon footprint.

"The prime minister does not oppose the Paris agreement from being discussed at the G20".

"The United States will continue to engage with key global partners in a manner that is consistent with our domestic priorities, preserving both a strong economy and a healthy environment", the footnote read.

McKenna said she had told Scott Pruitt, head of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, how dismayed she was at Trump's decision.

As a result, the US said it would not join those sections of the communique on climate and multilateral development banks. He said the other G-7 countries hoped to continue "constructive dialogue" with the US, but insisted on the Paris parameters. "The current withdrawal from the Paris Accord by the Washington administration is being overcome and countermanded by people throughout the whole world".

Take, for example, what happened at a meeting of the environment ministers from the Group of 7 industrialized nations on Sunday and Monday.

After the consensus adoption, David Balton, deputy USA assistant secretary for oceans and fisheries, reminded the summit "that on June 1 our president announced that the United States will withdraw from or renegotiate US participation in the Paris agreement or another global climate deal".
