Video to form three-quarters of mobile traffic by 2022

Global telecom industry will be adding over one million new mobile Internet users per day said the latest edition of the Ericsson Mobility Report

It said that nearly three million new mobile broadband subscriptions were added very day in Q1. As many people went to Times Square in NY to welcome in the new year for 2017.

With an average of one million new subscriptions per day on mobile networks, mobile data traffic increased 70% between the first quarter of 2016 and the first quarter of 2017, according to the latest Ericsson Mobility Report.

And if that number seems high, the Ericsson report reminds readers that in many countries the number of mobile subscriptions often exceeds a country's population thanks to factors such as inactive subscriptions, multiple subscriptions optimized for different types of calls, and citizens owning multiple devices. By the end of 2022, total smartphone mobile data traffic will have increased 9X, reaching 66 ExaBytes per month.

The growth in LTE will come as subscribers look for better user experiences, with rapidly increasing video traffic the main driver.

"I am particularly excited to see the industry's major steps to progress network evolution, including the approval of the Non-Standalone 5G New Radio that will enable early 5G deployments".

Globally, VoLTE subscriptions are projected to reach 4.6 billion in 2022.

On industry trends, the Mobility Report features articles on Internet for all, massive IoT coverage in cities and remote operation of vehicles with 5G.

The period will see LTE become the dominant access technology, reaching five billion subscriptions by 2022, after overtaking 2G in total number of subscriptions by 2018. Companies such as Verizon have begun 5G trials in the United States, while Indian telecom operators are also expected to adopt 5G technology this year.

In fact, Ericsson notes that it has taken only five years for LTE to cover 2.5 billion people, compared to eight years for WCDMA/HSPA, or 3G, and in the first quarter of this year alone, 250 million new LTE subscriptions were added.

Global growth in demand for mobile data will also drive 5G deployment. "This is important, not only because of voice and other advanced services that operators can deploy, but also because LTE- Advanced networks will form the platform for rapid rollout of 5G", says Emilio Romeo, Head of Ericsson Australia & New Zealand.

Ericsson estimates around 29 billion connected devices by 2022, out of which 18 billion will be related to IoT.

It says that, in mature mobile broadband markets, consumers typically expect a time-to-content of four seconds or less, which requires a minimum downlink speed of roughly 1Mbps for web browsing, 5Mbps for video streaming and 10Mbps for HD video.
