Warriors dethrone Cavaliers for second title in three years

The Golden State Warriors used a 28-4 flurry in the second quarter to take a lead they never relinquished, then relied on the scoring of Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry down the stretch to hold off the Cleveland Cavaliers en route to a 129-120 victory Monday night, clinching their second National Basketball Association championship in the past three seasons.

"I came here to have fun", Durant told ESPN.com before Game 4.

LeBron James fell two assists shy of his second consecutive triple-double, contributing team highs of 41 points and 13 boards for the Cavaliers.

The Warriors, who were playing a Game 5 for the first time in the postseason, shot 51.1 percent from the field and 36.8 percent on 3-pointers.

With Kevin Durant joining an already stacked Golden State team, there's no telling what the Warriors' ceiling could be.

Golden State took the best-of-seven series 4-1, reclaiming the throne they lost to the Cavaliers a year ago. Durant was almost flawless in Game 5, scoring 39 points on 14-20 shooting, with seven rebound and five assists.

"I just wanted to lay it all out there". He's the only one I looked at and said he's the only guy that could look me eye to eye and I knew it was going to be a battle. The Warriors became the first Bay Area team to capture a championship at home since the A's finished the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5 of the 1974 World Series. Green was 3-of-10 for 10 points and had 12 rebounds in the deciding game. The NBA season is over.

"You have to tip your hat to Cleveland", he said.

He'll get a championship ring after he scored 39 points - 11 of them in the fourth quarter, in the Warriors' 129-120 victory over the Cavaliers.

After missing their shot at a 16-0 playoff record, they returned to Oracle Arena and finally secured the clinching victory they couldn't pull off after winning three games against the Cleveland Cavaliers in last year's NBA Finals. With the Warriors facing a golden opportunity to erase the 3-1 ghosts that had haunted them for the past year, Durant carved up the Cavaliers with a lethal dose of outside shooting, tenacious defense and unquestioned efficiency to vanquish his chief rival.

Golden State answered with a game-turning 27-4 run, slam dunks by Andre Iguodala and Draymond Green and three Durant 3-pointers spicing the spurt that produced a 60-45 Warriors lead.
