Warriors fans celebrate NBA title with street party

The Golden State Warriors avenged their 2016 Finals collapse with a 129-120 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 5 to win the 2017 championship.

The Golden State Warriors secured their second National Basketball Association championship in three seasons with a 129-120 Game Five win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday, capping a near-perfect run through the playoffs.

As for Durant, he was awarded the Finals MVP, a year after leaving Oklahoma City to join an already flush Warriors squad.

The two embraced in 2012 and Durant, the 2017 NBA Finals MVP in his first season with the Warriors, found James to give him a hug and congratulate him on a great series.

"We weren't supposed to be here", Kevin Durant said.

"I don't need to be out on the court", James said.

"I'm gonna celebrate this one tonight", he said. This time, Curry, Durant and the rest of the team silenced Cleveland before they had a chance to make more noise.

"Can't stop the guy", Durant said.

Before the start of the 2017 NBA Finals, the Westgate SuperBook tipped Warriors as a minus-160 favourite to win next year's championship.

Two-time league MVP Steph Curry contributed 34 points and 10 assists, while 2015 Finals MVP Andre Iguodala came off the bench in stunning form to net 20 points.

"I just wanted to lay it all out there".

"I left everything on the floor every game, all five games", he said. Sure, Durant is a better player than anybody he was replacing (no knock on Harrison Barnes) but would the Warriors karma and chemistry continue with so many superstars?

Kyrie Irving, fighting through back tightness late in the game, had 26 points and J.R. Smith 25 for the Cavaliers, who, like the Warriors, were competing in their third straight Finals. The streak continued as he scored 30 points in game 3 and went 6-11 from beyond the arc.

James averaged a triple double with double-figures in points, rebounds and steals during the finals.

After two comfortable home wins at Oracle Arena and a thriller in the Game 3 in Cleveland, the Warriors suffered its first loss of the post-season in Game 4 against a defiant title-holder on the ropes.
