Watch Tapwrit win 2017 Belmont Stakes

Tapwrit has won the 149th running of the Belmont Stakes in Belmont Park, New York.

No horse has dominated the 3-year-old ranks so far, leaving the 1½-mile Belmont up for grabs among 12 horses that on Saturday will run the longest race of their lives. Irish War Cry finished second while Patch took third.

Ridden by Jose Ortiz, Tapwrit ran 1 1/2 miles in 2:30.02 on his home track.

"Tapwrit was getting a handsome trip", Pletcher said, according to the AP.

Swiss watchmaker Longines are the Official Timekeeper and Watch of the 2017 edition of the Triple Crown series, and owner, trainer and jockey were all presented with elegant Longines timepieces to honour their victory. The problem is that there's no value in taking him as his odds continue to drop the closer we get to Saturday's 6:37PM ET post time. "It looked like Irish War Cry still had something left, but the last sixteenth, he dug down deep".

This year's Triple Crown bid was scuppered when Kentucky Derby victor Always Dreaming finished a distant eighth behind Cloud Computing at the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico at the end of May.

Epicharis will now fly back to Japan on Thursday after the UAE Derby runner-up was scratched on the day of the race in a pre-race veterinary exam. He was found to be lame on Wednesday and was treated with anti-inflammatory medication Wednesday and Thursday.

Winning jockey Ortiz was emulating his brother Irad, who won last year's Belmont on Creator.

Tapwrit became the third different horse to win a Triple Crown race this year, with Always Dreaming taking the Kentucky Derby and Cloud Computing taking the Preakness Stakes. Tapwrit did just that Saturday, digging up the last of the sun-caked earth between him and the Belmont Park finish line and leaving trainer Todd Pletcher exultant.

"We felt like with the five weeks in between, and with the way this horse had trained, that he had a legitimate chance", added Pletcher.

"I don't think that it's been any secret that Jose has been a rising star for the last few years", Pletcher said. Patch, another Pletcher-trained horse, returned $6.50 to show.

Graham Motion took Irish War Cry back to his base in Fair Hill, Md. and started planning a summer campaign.

"I was a lot more disappointed after the Derby, because I know what the horse is capable of, and [he] didn't show it on Derby day", Maragh said. "But it's the Belmont". It's a tough race. Gormley finished fourth and completed the $2 superfecta of $4,486.
