What do the election results mean for Brexit?

Brexit negotiations will be more hard for British Prime Minister Theresa May following the general election results, a think-tank expert said Friday.

A hung parliament could play in Labour's favour even if it won less seats than the Conservatives because it is politically closer to smaller rivals on several issues. Sources add that the meeting of the European Council on 22 June is the EU's new deadline for wanting to know May's plan now that she no longer holds a working majority.

Referring to the "strong relationship" she had with the DUP, but giving little detail of how their arrangement might work, she said the government would "guide the country through the crucial Brexit talks" that begin in just 10 days' time.

The poll forecast the Scottish National Party (SNP) would win 34 seats, the center-left Liberal Democrats 14, the Welsh nationalist party Plaid Cymru three and the Greens one.

The shock outcome - a far cry from the landslide victory predicted for May's party in April - raised questions over whether she would resign as prime minister. But her party is deeply divided over what they want from Brexit and the result means British businesses still have no idea what trading rules they can expect in the coming years. Instead of accepting defeat, however, May claims that she will continue to push for Brexit negotiations.

Number 10 had earlier said: "We can confirm that the Democratic Unionist Party have agreed to the principles of an outline agreement to support the Conservative Government on a confidence and supply basis when Parliament returns next week".

I think if we'd had a large Conservative majority like all the polling was pointing to, then Theresa May could've pushed through her version of Brexit.

Putting on a courageous face after a disastrous night, May said her parties status as the largest vote-getter in the election gave her continued legitimacy as prime minister.

Former Treasury chief George Osborne - who was sacked by May past year - called her a "dead woman walking", and opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn said he was ready to contest another election at any time. As many Britons who voted "Leave" have come to realize, Brexit was a political Pandora's box. I think the whole debate over what kind of Brexit we - the nation needs and the nation wants, I think, is coming back to the fore. She campaigned against Brexit, then had to reinvent herself as a true believer in it when the British unexpectedly revolted against the European Union and she was thrust into the prime ministership. May emphasized toughness on terrorism, especially after recent attacks in Manchester and London, but proved to be an uninspiring campaigner who refused to take part in televised debates with her opponents.

"We put forward our policies - strong and hopeful policies - and they've gained an awesome response and traction", he said.
