What happens if there's a hung parliament?

The previous high of 191 women elected in a single general election, which occurred in 2015, has also been smashed.

With the General Election ending in a hung parliament, there could be days or weeks of political horse-trading before the final form of the next government is settled. Who will be the next Prime Minister?

If this doesn't work, one party with a lot of seats - nearly certainly the Conservatives or Labour - could try to run the country without a majority.

Theresa May remains PM. In the case of a hung parliament, the existing Prime Minister (unless they step down) will remain in office until a decision of how to form a new government has been made.

- If this does translate into a hung parliament when results come through, Theresa May as incumbent prime minister will have the first shot at trying to form a government - either as a minority or in coalition with others.

Theresa May has said that the Conservatives can make a minority government, because they'll get the extra support she needs from the DUP (Democratic Union Party) from Northern Ireland.

Mr Farron held on to his Westmorland and Lonsdale seat in Cumbria on a much-reduced majority, down from 8,949 in 2015 to just 777 now.

After going into the June 8 poll on the back of opinion polls suggesting she was heading for a substantially increased majority, Mrs May has lost two ministers, including the author of her manifesto, among a string of Conservative casualties.

What would happen if Mrs May resigned?

That means the smaller parties would support the government on financial matters like the Budget, and in confidence votes which would otherwise bring the government down.

It is forcast the party will achieve 319 seats compared to Labours 260, the SNP's 35 and Lib Dems 14.

A shaken Prime Minister pledged to create "a period of stability", after a jubilant Jeremy Corbyn told her "to go" after making significant gains across the country.

The former leader of the Liberal Democrats was the first major figure to fall, losing his seat to Labour in Sheffield Hallam.

Finally, a party that lacks a majority could simply try to go it alone and govern as a minority government, vulnerable to being voted down at any time and trying to win the support of other parties on an ad hoc basis for every vote.

Only if a second confidence vote is lost is an early election held.
