What Royce Lewis brings to the Minnesota Twins as No 1 pick

In essence, with a competitive balance pick at No. 35 overall and a second-rounder at No. 37, the Twins have a chance to walk away with three first-round talents if the right players fall due to cost concerns.

Lewis played both shortstop and outfield in high school, but the Twins classified him as a shortstop when Commissioner Rob Manfred made the announcement at MLB Network studios. Lewis hit.377 with four homers and stole 25 bases for JSerra Catholic High School.

High school pitcher/shortstop Hunter Greene received recognition from current big leaguers, as well as TV and radio host Larry King, after the Cincinnati Reds selected him with the No. 2 overall pick.

At No. 3, San Diego selected North Carolina high school left-hander MacKenzie Gore. In the National League, Anthony Rizzo (sixth round in 2007 by the Red Sox) finished fourth for the Chicago Cubs, and Justin Turner (seventh round in 2006 by the Cincinnati Reds) finished ninth for the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Oregonian reports that at 15, Heimlich pleaded guilty to sexually molesting a 6-year-old family member.

University of Virginia juniors went back to back, as the Arizona Diamondbacks selected first baseman Pavin Smith at No. 7 and the Philadelphia Phillies picked center fielder Adam Haseley at No. 8.

Schmidt underwent Tommy John surgery in early May. "It was an unbelievable feeling". He does have a solid, sharp-breaking curveball, however, and he's left-handed, which puts him ahead of Pearson for me.

Falvey also said he believed that Lewis "separated himself from those other guys just a bit", although the decision to pass on two-way phenom Hunter Greene was "really tough".

Major League Baseball teams were reportedly more interested in him as a pitcher, though, the position at which his fastball has been clocked as high as 102 miles per hour. He has posted an OPS of.850 or better each of the past two seasons and increased his power this year, hitting 12 home runs for the Cougars.

Then there's Louisville pitcher Brendan McKay and Vanderbilt pitcher Kyle Wright.

Mike Radcliff, Twins vice president of player personnel, called Lewis "one of elite athletes" of any draft and said his speed is near the top of the scouting scale. "You can't draft him", said one senior NL official to Mayo and Callis. Toronto also picked high school catcher Hagen Danner with their second-round selection (61st overall).

Unusual skill: I make a lot of people laugh and have a lot of fun. UC Irvine second baseman Keston Hiura went ninth to Milwaukee even though he was limited to DH duties this season and is expected to have surgery once he signs. The crafty pitcher with a fastball that reaches 96 miles per hour and a slider, curveball and changeup in his repertoire intrigued the Yankees despite concerns over his irregular delivery.

Daily sports headlines from across Gwinnett County, including high school, professional and college news. Perhaps they take some flyers on high school guys but with the lack of money, college could definitely be the focus.

Lewis played shortstop at JSerra and could also project as an outfielder.
