About Us

The Oak Ridge Observer is a locally owned, weekly newspaper, which was launched in December 2004. You can find us at more than 70 locations in Oak Ridge and the surrounding area. The Observer begins arriving on stands at noon every Thursday, and was certified as a newspaper of general distribution for Anderson County in October 2006. This important recognition allows the county and all its cities, such as Oak Ridge and Clinton, to place their legal notices with us.

Our current distribution is 5,000 copies, and should that change, we will update our website immediately.

MEET THE PUBLISHER

Stan Mitchell, the editor and publisher of The Oak Ridge Observer, has worked at three news papers following a four-year stint in the Marine Corps where he served in the infantry. He graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with a BS in journalism from the College of Communications. Prior to being discharged as a Sergeant in the Marine Corps, he participated in Operation Silver Wake, the evacuation of U.S. citizens from Tirana, Albania, in 1997 as a member of Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, Eighth Marines. He and his platoon members received Combat Action Ribbons for their service there. Stan currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce and the Young Professionals Group of Oak Ridge.

His most recent award is the Postma Young Professional Medal, awarded Dec. 1, 2009, by the East Tennessee Economic Council. Winners of past Postma Young Professional Medals include ORNL Lab Director Dr. Thom Mason and former Oak Ridge Mayor David Bradshaw.
